Since we’re heading into the time of year where we all start looking for the beautiful colors of fall, I thought it would be fun to learn how nature actually creates all those beautiful colors.

Most of the beautiful fall colors have been there all year, but they’ve been covered up, disguised by the dominant green of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a green pigment, present in all green plants, responsible for the absorption of light to provide energy for photosynthesis. During the spring and summer, the increased amount of sunlight causes trees and plants to produce lots of chlorophyl. When our days start to get shorter and the temperatures drop, less and less chlorophyll is produced and we see the tree’s natural leaf color. Eventually there will be no chlorophyll produced and the leaves will die and fall off the tree. But in the process, we get the beautiful colors that we all associate with fall. It’s like we’re seeing trees in their green costumes for half the year, then we catch a glimpse of them out of their green costumes and see their “true colors” for just one brief season. The leaves fall off, and are naked during the winter, and they start the whole photosynthesis process all over again. Nature is AMAZING! Happy Fall everyone.

They will share methods and tips on how to get started preserving food by pickling. And who doesn’t love a good pickle? But much more can be “pickled” as you’ll learn in this class.

Riverside County Department of Waste Management presents a program on crating your own environmentally friendly cleaning solutions.  Say good-bye to toxic cleaners and heavy scented cleaners!  Explore the benefits of using eco-friendly cleaning products made from ingredients in your pantry like baking soda and vinegar.  Attendees will recieve a recipe booklet with simple recipes to get started.  The program in presented in conjunction witht the upcoming Idyllwild Hazardous Waste drop-off at the transfer station on October 19.

Locals in Need…

Wayne and Karen Johnston have been well-known residents of Pine Cove for over 40 years. Wayne owned a music store in Idyllwild for many years before becoming a real estate agent in 2000. Karen was the owner/operator of “A Cut Above” hair salon and cut and styled many locals’ hair over the years, perhaps yours?

Sad news has hit this wonderful couple with some trying times ahead. Last month, Karen was diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma Cancer. A CAT scan revealed the bad news, and Karen was sent home. Hospice was called in to provide comfort care.

Thank you for reading this. I hope you will find it in your hearts to contribute whatever you can to our Pine Cove friends Wayne and Karen Johnston.
