Labor Day:

Yes, Labor day is actually about workers. In the late 1800’s, manufacturing was replacing agriculture , at least in most cities, as the main employer of workers. With the rise of factories and the increase in immigration to the United States, employers were taking advantage of low wages and an excess of low paid workers. There were so many new immigrants thankful to have work that they didn’t dare complain about working 7 days a week, 12 hours a day. Even children as young as 5-6 years old were employed in factories. The working condition were extremely unsafe & unhealthy. All throughout the 1800’s workers had been organizing into unions based on different industries. The unions were working toward better working conditions, a shorter work week, and shorter work days. Also making child labor illegal.

After several violent strikes such as the Haymarket Riots in 1886, laborers started to give themselves a day off in protest and chose the first Monday in September to hold a parade and march through the cities. This tradition spread across the United States, and in 1894 after a particularly violent strike by the railway workers called the Pullman strike, President Grover Cleveland made Labor Day a federal holiday. Although now days, we mostly just celebrate Labor Day as the “unofficial end of summer” we can thank the labor movement for our 5 day work week, our 8 hour work day and the laws prohibiting child labor.
