Don’t Forget…

There’s a whole lotta information in every Good Morning Idyllwild after all the current happenings. Some people have asked why the Yoga & Meditation classes are no longer here…THEY ARE! All you have to do is keep scrolling past all the current events, coming events, and you will find a plethora of information that is ALWAYS there whenever you need it. The link to all the Yoga/Meditation classes is under the heading: “Body & Soul”. The link to what hotels have openings in the next couple weekends is under “Hotel Information”. The list of churches in town and what time their services are is under “Churches”. Even what days the dump is open. Don’t forget that all this info is in every Good Morning Idyllwild…you just need to keep scrolling if you need it!

Butterflies:

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty. Maya Angelou

It’s Butterfly week here in Idyllwild, the perfect season to find butterflies, especially this Saturday at the Idyllwild Nature Center. Butterflies are amazing insects. They differ from moths in a few different ways. Butterflies fly during the day…moths fly at night. Butterflies are very colorful and moths are generally much plainer in color. Butterflies rest with their wings closed, and Moths rest with their wings open flat. There are over 165,000 species of butterflies and they live on every continent except Antarctica (they don’t like cold weather). They smell & taste food through their feet, and they don’t have actual mouths, but long tube like structures called proboscis that unrolls when needed to suck nectar. They feed only on liquid. The males even feed on mud to get extra minerals.

Butterflies have a 4-stage life cycle, the last part being the shortest. Adult butterflies lay eggs on a plant. When the eggs hatch into tiny worms (larvae) they eat the plants they were born on to get big. Once big enough, they start to create a pupae which in butterflies is a hard protein type structure that encases the larvae (moths create their pupae by spinning silk). After 10-15 days in their pupae, metamorphosis has taken place and the insect inside breaks the pupae open and emerges as a beautiful butterfly. They live from a week to a few months. Some stay in the area they were born, and some migrate thousands of miles like the Monarchs that you can view near Monterey in November. Did you know that a group of butterflies is referred to as a “Kaleidoscope” or a “Flutter”.You can learn more and experience some up close this Saturday at the Idyllwild Nature Center from 10 am – 3 pm.

August’s full moon is called the Full Sturgeon Moon, after the primitive fish that used to be abundant in North America’s lakes and rivers during the summer months. Having remained mostly unchanged since the earliest fossil records, sturgeons are ancient living fossils that can grow up until 3.5 meters long, or as long as two adult humans stacked on top of each other. Nowadays, however, it’s almost impossible to see a sturgeon during the Full Sturgeon Moon. While they used to thrive, sturgeons are now considered the single most critically endangered group of species on earth. In North America, Native American tribes also saw the Full Sturgeon Moon as signifying a time of bountiful harvest. The Cherokee tribes called it the Full Fruit Moon, and many other tribes referred to it as the Black Berries Moon. The Sioux called it the Moon When All Things Ripen.
