Back To School:

Back in the 1700’s & early 1800’s most schools were missionary schools and the basic goal was literacy. After the Revolutionary War, most states started requiring their kids to attend school with Massachusetts being the first in 1852. That probably accounts for the fact that it is the #1 “most educated” state in the U.S. Most states require kids to attend 180 days of school. Colorado only goes 160 and Kansas goes 186. In Japan, students attend school 220 days a year. And South Korea, the #1 most educated country, has its kids attending school for 12-16 hours per day. They have a 97.9% literacy rate and 70% of their population completes college.
But have you noticed that August seems to be the new September? If you’re over 40, you remember when we didn’t go back to school until after labor Day. Now, in most states, school starts sometime in August. This started changing around the 1990’s for several reasons. With standardized testing, teachers needed more time to prepare kids for the tests. They also noticed when kids were out of school for too long, they forgot what they had learned and took longer to catch up again. Now most U.S. Schools start sometime in August. Of course, they still attend an average of 180 days, but have numerous breaks throughout the year. Here in Idyllwild, our kids will return to school on August 13th after a 65 day summer break. But don’t feel sorry for them, they have 4 big breaks to look forward to during their 10 months of school. There’s a full week at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, a full week during President’s Holiday (February) then another week of Spring Break in April. Then school is over on June 4th. Please watch out for all the excited kids who can’t WAIT to get “Back to School”

Perseid Meteor Shower
The next Perseid meteor shower peaks around the night of Aug. 11 and before dawn on Aug.12, 2024, with good viewing conditions for a few days on either side of the peak. The Perseid meteor shower, commonly known as the Perseids, is visible annually from mid-July to late August. Although the moon will be 50% illuminated during the peak of the Perseids this year, it will set around midnight, providing dark skies until dawn — ideal for meteor watching!
If you’re unable to hunt for Perseids in person you can watch the Perseid meteor shower online for free this weekend courtesy of the Virtual Telescope Project. It starts at 6 pm Sunday night Idyllwild time.
