Camps in Idyllwild:
As a resident in Idyllwild, you may be unaware of the history of church & youth camps in Idyllwild. Idyllwild is, what it is today partly due to all these camps, many which are still here unknown to many of you. Without going into detail on any one camp, the history is that Claudius Emerson, a devout Methodist who valued Christian values and family life, gifted or sold at dramatic discounts, many acres of land beginning in 1919 to religious and youth organizations to build camps. One of his first gifts was Camp Emerson to the Boy Scouts which still operates today. At one time, more than 28 camps have operated in the Idyllwild area over the years. Today there are a handful left that are still operating as they were originally intended when they formed back in the 1920’s , 30’s, 40’s & 50’s.
Camp Emerson, the Boy Scout Camp down off Tollgate Road was a 5 acre gift from Emerson in 1919. It is still owned and operated today by Scouting America. You probably don’t even know there’s a small lake on the property. Every year, thousands of Scouts still use this facility.
Idyllwild Pines Camp – across the street from Idyllwild Elementary School is owned by a private Christian organization and has been operating continuously since 1923. It has 52 acres of land with multi-use cabins and facilities that can be rented out by outside groups. You may be able to view it when you attend the annual Rotary Harvest Festival or play pickleball, or use the dog park. They have been very committed to working with the community and sharing their resources.
Camp Maranatha, sits unnoticed at the end of the street from the Laundromat. It is 25 acres and has been owned by the Advent Christian Conference since 1951. It can be rented out by outside groups, and allows use of its’ grounds for the MCMA Food Distribution program and has also allowed community sports on its’ ball field at different times.
Camp Buckhorn, is on Hwy. 243 on the way up to Pine Cove. It has been owned by Community of Christ church since 1952 and is 120 acres. Its facilities have been used for Quilt shows, Volleyball, and other various activities. It is available to rent by outside groups as well.
Astro Camp, which is owned by Guided Discoveries, is now a year round science camp for kids. It is 80 acres and was originally a school named Desert Sun from 1946 until the 1980’s. Most residents have rarely been exposed to the facilities at Astro Camp, unless you have school age children who have attended the science camp there, normally in the 8th grade.
Tahquitz Pines , the newly renovated retreat in Idyllwild was originally owned by the Wycliff Bible Translators and operated as a Christian Camp until 2022. All of the original buildings have been refurbished and any resident can go onto the grounds to the newly opened Peak Restaurant.
Living Free Animal Sanctuary and Camp Ronald Mc Donald in Mountain Center were also originally Christian camps that were eventually sold and used for other purposes. Without the presence of all these wholesome, family friendly camps, our town may not have become the down-to-earth place it is today.

Full Thunder Moon
July’s full moon is called the Full Thunder Moon, after the frequent thunderstorms that roll in during early summer. Thunderstorms are more likely to form in humid environments during summer because of the moist, hot air rising from the ground to the higher, colder parts of our atmosphere. The Full Thunder Moon is, therefore, a warning sign for a surprisingly dangerous time of the year.
