Declaration of Independence
July 4th, 1776:

This weekend, and yesterday in particular, we celebrate the document that was drafted by a committee of 5 men of the 2nd Continental Congress, but primarily by Thomas Jefferson over a period of 17 days in an isolated room in Philadelphia. The document officially announced and explained to the inhabitants of the 13 colonists, the King of England, and the rest of the world, that the 13 colonies declared themselves separated from Britain. Most all the colonist were from England, and for 169 years, England’s King and Parliament were in charge of the colonist that settled here. But over that time, and due to England’s lack of funds fighting different wars around the globe, they became more and more oppressive and corrupt with their governing of the colonies. Through a series of increased taxes, and decreased freedoms, the colonist became more and more rebellious and eventually, 56 men risked their lives to declare our intentions to separate from England and become an independent nation.

The revolutionary war lasted 7 years (from 1775 – 1882) and without the Declaration of Independence, the world would not have recognized us as an independent nation, and France would not have been allowed to aid us in the war. It is doubtful that without their funding and assistance, we could have won, what the UK calls the “American War of Independence”. It took 6 additional years after the Declaration of Independence was adopted, for us to win our independence from England, but since that time, our “Declaration” has served as a model and inspiration to many other countries around the world.

Of the 56 delegates that signed the declaration, the youngest was 26, the oldest was 70 (Benjamin Franklin). Nine of the signers died during the Revolutionary War. Had we lost the war, all 56 signers would have been executed for treason. 248 years ago, the founding fathers risked their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to implement a system of government that gives each of us … “certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness.” Happy 4th of July everyone!
