Solstice:

A solstice is an event that occurs twice a year, usually June 20th or 21st, and December 21st or 22nd. The word solstice is derived from the Latin sol (“sun”) and sistere (“to stand still”), because at the solstices, the Sun “appears to stand still” before reversing direction.

The earth’s tilt never changes, but its proximity to the sun does change. It takes the earth 1 year to rotate around the sun. During that year, for 6 months OUR hemisphere (the northern) is pointed toward the sun (Spring & Summer) and for 6 months our hemisphere is pointed away from the sun (Fall & Winter). On the day of the two solstices, depending on what hemisphere you live in, you will experience the years longest day and shortest night (or shortest day and longest night on the December solstice). From the date of the June solstice in our hemisphere, our days will slowly start to get shorter and shorter until the December solstice when they will start to get longer and longer until the June solstice when it all starts over again.

The equinoxes which happen in March and September are the days of the year when the amount of daylight and night-time are equal.

So enjoy our longest day of the year this Wednesday June 20th because after Thursday, our days will slowly start to get shorter. Happy June Solstice or in our part of the world…the first day of Summer!

New Visitor Center

Opening July 4th
We Need Volunteers!

This new Visitor Center, located right behind the new public bathrooms, has a small organizing team getting ready to open on the 4th of July. Our goal is to find enough volunteers to work a 3 hour shift on Saturdays and Sundays to be open throughout the year. We would also like to be open on holidays that don’t fall on Sat/Sun (like 4th of July & the following Friday) and all week between Christmas & New Year. The shifts will be Am Shift: 10am – 1pm and PM Shift: 1pm – 4pm. If we end up getting more volunteers than expected, we will expand our hours. All you need is a love for our town and a willingness to help visitors to our hill have a great time while they’re here. We will train you to do the rest.

If you would like to volunteer to talk to visitors, help them find their way and point them in the direction of “A Good Time” please contact me at hello@GoodMorningIdyllwild.com. Download the Volunteer Application below, fill it out, take a photo with your phone and send it off to hello@GoodMorningIdyllwild.com or drop it off at The Art Dept. on lower Pine Crest.

We will be asking businesses to contribute donations to help pay for recurring costs such as printing maps, etc. The building and all utilities have been graciously provided by Shane & Ashley Stewart.

Looking for a forever home! Kismet, a husky MIX is about 3.5 months old and weighs 13 lbs. This incredibly good mannered puppy is house trained, understands “sit” and “come”, and is quiet. She is currently in the process of her vaccinations and will be spayed soon. Kismet is good on a leash (in her yard until fully vaccinated-safety first!) and is super affectionate. Please call ARF if you’d like to learn more or meet 951-659-1122 Kismet. You won’t regret it!
