Manzanita Tree/Bush:

The Manzanita bush and tree are everywhere in Idyllwild. There are 105 different species of manzanita and Idyllwild has several of these. You will normally find them in sunny places (not usually under shady stands of pines). The flowers are white or pink, and look like tiny little bells. They are related to the red snow flower. The wood of the manzanita is very very hard and can be used for bird perches and dog chew toys. It is non-toxic so if you have a dog that loves to chew, get him a hearty piece of manzanita. It also burns very hot in fireplaces and stoves, but be careful…it can burn so hot that it can crack stoves. It is super drought resistant and in severe drought, it can allow an entire branch or section to die while the remainder of the plant thrives.

The native Americans used almost all the parts of the manzanita for some purpose. In the fall, you can collect the curly red bark and make tea out of it or add it to your favorite tea. The flowers are edible and can be sprinkled on salads. The berries, once ripe, can be cooked and jelly or cider can be made from them as well as eaten dried. The leaves were used medicinally by the native Americans to make poultices for wounds or burns. They also chewed on the leaves (but did not swallow) to relieve headaches or cramps. The leaves can be boiled to make a cure for urinary tract infections or stomach ulcers. If you want to get more extensive, here’s an online class you can take to learn about manzanita. Click Here.

Many people think manzanita is illegal to cut but there is only one species that is protected by the California Forest Dept. the Presidio Manzanita and it grows in Northern California. Of course you can’t cut any tree on State or Federal wilderness without a permit, but if you have manzanita on your own property, you can cut away. If you want to cut manzanita out in the forest, go by the Forest Service and they will see you a permit for a nominal fee and tell you exactly where you can cut some. The Forest Service has been doing some major trimming along the fire roads out past Idyllwild Arts and all the way up to Pine Cove and there are lots of cut manzanita just lying around out there right now.
