Organizations that “Do Good” in Idyllwild:
Each of these organizations would love for you to become a member, donate financially, or volunteer your time in some way. Please reach out if you can help:
- ARF – If you love animals, please consider supporting them. They find homes for pets needing adoption, they help reunite lost pets with their owners, they provide low-cost veterinary care and provide nail clinics. They always need your contributions, but if you can help by being a foster or dog walker, or office worker, give them a call. 951-659-1122
- Idyllwild Help Center – You may only know them as a thrift store, but the Help Center is so much more. They provide food and food vouchers, wood for heating homes, utility assistance, medical vouchers for doctors, gas vouchers to get to Dr. appts., help with kids sports fees, and they are always there with a smile to help us clean out our unwanted “stuff”. They gladly accept cash donations, items for the thrift store, and are always looking for volunteers to help keep things organized at the thrift store. - Mountain Communities Mutual Aid – This organization provides low or no-cost food boxes twice monthly to ANYONE who needs or wants them. The food comes primarily from a large food bank in the desert and is organized and distributed by a huge team of volunteers every 2 weeks. You can sign up HERE and then once you’re in the system, you can donate money, become a volunteer, request a food box at extremely reasonable prices or even free if you can’t afford anything, request other help, and now you can check a box that will add you to a general “Volunteer” list making yourself available to other local organizations that may need volunteers now and then. There is a cadre of wonderful people who get together twice a month to give back to our community and those in need. Please visit their website to learn more: www.mountainaid.net
- Friends of the San Jacinto County Parks – This organization supports the county park and the Nature Center. They provide volunteers the County Park & the Nature Center, maintain the gardens at the Nature Center, help with Snow Days at the Nature Center. They would love to have your financial support by becoming a member or a volunteer in any of the above mentioned areas. Click Here to find out more.
- Idyllwild Community Center – This organization has its hands in so many things. Not only do they maintain the kids playground, pickleball courts, skate park, dog park, Amphitheater, & Town Hall….they have a once a month food bank (Feeding America) run the after-school program at Town Hall, run adult & youth sports, put on the Halloween Carnival, the Christmas Tree Lighting, and the Easter Egg Hunt. They do all of this with a small board of directors, a small amount of money from property taxes from just Idyllwild residents, and a lot of volunteers. There are many other organizations in Idyllwild that may be a good fit for you such as the Quilters, Friends of the Library, Art Alliance, Garden Club, etc. You can always be as busy as you choose to be in Idyllwild.
Where did Groundhog Day come from?
If you didn’t notice, the halfway point of winter is coming up tomorrow (Saturday Feb. 3rd this year). That’s basically why Groundhog Day was invented…to give people something fun to think about while they’re trying to survive winter.
In ancient Roman times, hibernating animals were used to predict when winter would end. But they didn’t have groundhogs…they used hedgehogs. After the fall of the Roman Empire, this tradition was combined with a Christian holiday around the same time called “Candlemas” where folks in Europe took a candle to church to have it blessed which they felt would bring their households blessings for the remainder of the winter. When German immigrants brought their traditions to America in the 1700’s, primarily to the Pennsylvania dutch region, there were no hedgehogs so groundhogs were the closest thing to them (in Canada they use marmots). Groundhogs are giant chunky squirrel type animals that hibernate. Legend says if a groundhog pokes its head out on Groundhog Day (the halfway point in winter) and it’s snowy, cold, or it sees its shadow, we’re in for at least 6 more weeks of hard winter. But if it pokes its head out and it’s sunny, warm and no shadow, we’re headed for an early spring in about 4 weeks. Of course the predictions are rarely correct, but it gives everyone something fun to talk about and makes us realize that we’ve made it halfway through winter.

PCT Shuttle Van Idea:
If you would be interested in driving the Idyllwild Shuttle Van for a 4-5 hour shift on a Saturday or Sunday in mid-March through the end of May, please email me. You would be working for “TIPS ONLY” which would be done through cash, Venmo or Zelle. If enough people are interested in providing this service on weekends only during the height of the PCT season, please let me know. We can have a meeting with all interested parties.
