Animal of the Week: Western Screech Owl

Just in time for Halloween…The Western Screech Owl.
I kept hearing this fascinating sound at night like a fluttering coo. Then a reader asked if I would highlight the Screech Owl which they knew we had here in Idyllwild. THAT WAS MY SOUND! I was overjoyed to learn what I’d been hearing in my trees at night.
Western Screech Owls live in forested areas primarily, but sometimes deserts and even near cities. They are small owls; about the size of a pair of binoculars. They are completely nocturnal so you won’t see them in daytime unless you hear a ruckus from a group of song birds trying to get one to move out of their tree. They nest in tree hollows and eat mice, voles, rats, bats, and even occasionally a rabbit. Also insects and other crawly things. One of the most interesting things about owls is they puke out pellets which are undigested balls of bones, hair, nails, etc that their system cannot digest. You can buy pellets online HERE for an interesting biology project (shhhh…you don’t need to have kids to enjoy and learn from this) and HERE is the link to the charts that help you identify what the bird has eaten.
Other fascinating things about owls are, their ears are asymentrical (not evenly lined up) to help them pinpoint sounds. Their eyes are tubes instead of eyeballs like humans. This helps them see for long distances like a pair of binoculars. Because their eyes don’t move around, they have to move their heads and that’s why their necks are designed to rotate 270 degrees (that’s the same as if we could turn our heads around 3/4 of a circle). Their feathers are also specially designed to make their flight almost silent which makes them excellent night time hunters. The best way to experience a screech owl, is to listen carefully at night. Here’s a link to a video of what you’re listening for.

Local Organization of the Month:

In this new section, we will highlight a different 501(c)3 organization each month. We hope to give you ideas on different organizations that you can get involved with both as volunteers & donors. The secret to community is “GETTING INVOLVED” and we want to highlight the different organizations that give to our community and need people like YOU to get involved.
Idyllwild Community Center (ICC)

Idyllwild Community Center is a local non-profit organization that provides recreational, cultural, and social opportunities for residents and visitors. Currently, ICC puts on free town events, like the Tree Lighting Festival, Easter Egg Hunt, three free concerts on the holiday weekends in the summer, and the Halloween Carnival. It hosts the Farmers Market and Feeding America Food Distribution, and ICC offers numerous programs, including youth and adult sports, senior fitness programs, as well as low-income after-school and holiday childcare and activities. ICC also owns and operates the beautiful Butterfield Amphitheater, Idyllwild Town Hall, and Idyllwild Community Playground, and it operates Idyllwild’s Skatepark, Dog Park, and Pickle Ball Court. For more information, please visit ICC at Idyllwildcommunitycenter.org.
This small group manages a HUGE number of facilities and events and they do it all with a very small board of directors and staff. The sheer scope of things this group does would make your head spin. And if you wanted to volunteer regularly or just occasionally, this would be a wonderful organization that could use your gifts and talents. From refereeing sports to hiding easter eggs, to setting up for tree lighting to working snack booths at the summer concerts. There is SO MUCH to be involved in with this group. Just the facilities alone are a huge task. And most people think some form of County Government manages all of this. They don’t…ICC, a local non-profit does it all.
If you would like to get involved with ICC in some form, please email them at info@idyllwildcommunitycenter.org
