Animal of the Week: Cougar

Yes, we have cougars in Idyllwild. You are VERY unlikely to ever see one, but they are here. The photo below is a screen shot from a local Pine Cove resident’s security camera just a week ago. The last attack in California was in Orange County in 2004 of a bike rider who was fixing something on his bike during a ride. They are “ambush animals” which means they sit and wait for their prey to come by. They mostly take down deer and other various small animals. You might be surprised to hear they are NOT the top of the food chain. They will relinquish a kill to a bear or a pack of wolves or coyotes if necessary. They are very solitary and also crepuscular. Now there’s a word….it comes from the latin word for twilight and means they hunt at dusk and dawn.
They have the distinction of being the mammal with the most names. Depending on where you are, they may be called cougars, pumas, mountain lions, panthers, catamounts, American lions, Mexican lions, etc.
They are present all the way from the Yukon in Canada down through South America, but only on the western section of the United States and Canada. They were hunted to extinction in the eastern U.S. and Canada with the exception of panthers in Florida. They ARE a protected species in the United States and it is illegal to hunt or kill them. I have been here 30 years and have never seen one, but it’s amazing to know we have them!
If there is an animal, bug, plant, flower, tree, or any other local flora & fauna you’re curious about, I would love to have you email me with ideas for future topics. hello@goodmorningidyllwild.com

Local Organization of the Month:

In this new section, we will highlight a different 501(c)3 organization each month. We hope to give you ideas on different organizations that you can get involved with both as volunteers & donors. The secret to community is “GETTING INVOLVED” and we want to highlight the different organizations that give to our community and need people like YOU to get involved.
Idyllwild Community Center (ICC)

Idyllwild Community Center is a local non-profit organization that provides recreational, cultural, and social opportunities for residents and visitors. Currently, ICC puts on free town events, like the Tree Lighting Festival, Easter Egg Hunt, three free concerts on the holiday weekends in the summer, and the Halloween Carnival. It hosts the Farmers Market and Feeding America Food Distribution, and ICC offers numerous programs, including youth and adult sports, senior fitness programs, as well as low-income after-school and holiday childcare and activities. ICC also owns and operates the beautiful Butterfield Amphitheater, Idyllwild Town Hall, and Idyllwild Community Playground, and it operates Idyllwild’s Skatepark, Dog Park, and Pickle Ball Court. For more information, please visit ICC at Idyllwildcommunitycenter.org.
This small group manages a HUGE number of facilities and events and they do it all with a very small board of directors and staff. The sheer scope of things this group does would make your head spin. And if you wanted to volunteer regularly or just occasionally, this would be a wonderful organization that could use your gifts and talents. From refereeing sports to hiding easter eggs, to setting up for tree lighting to working snack booths at the summer concerts. There is SO MUCH to be involved in with this group. Just the facilities alone are a huge task. And most people think some form of County Government manages all of this. They don’t…ICC, a local non-profit does it all.
If you would like to get involved with ICC in some form, please email them at info@idyllwildcommunitycenter.org
