Animal of the Week: Merriam’s Chipmunk

What if you knew your only purpose in life was to entertain humans until you became a meal for another animal? Well, hopefully, they don’t know because they are so darn cute! Merriam’s Chipmunk. They get their name from the chip-chip-chip sound they make. They are the smallest member of the squirrel family, and they differ from ground squirrels in that they have stripes (and they’re smaller too). They only live about 2-3 years and they are masters at gathering seeds (and distributing them in the process). One chipmunk can gather up to 165 acorns in one day. Their cheeks can expand to 3 times the size of their heads and they store more seeds and nuts than they can use in a winter.

In the winter, they go into “torpor” which is a semi hibernation but they wake up every week or so to eat. From March to November, you can see them scampering around rock piles and they are very entertaining to watch. But they are also one of the main food sources for hawks, snakes, foxes, bobcats, raccoons, & owls. House cats also love to catch and eat them.

Local Organization of the Month:

In this new section, we will highlight a different 501(c)3 organization each month. We hope to give you ideas on different organizations that you can get involved with both as volunteers & donors. The secret to community is “GETTING INVOLVED” and we want to highlight the different organizations that give to our community and need people like YOU to get involved.

Animal Rescue Friends

If you have a big place in your heart for animals, you might want to give some of your time to ARF. ARF has been serving the community since 1994. A volunteer, grassroots, non-profit organization, ARF’s mission is to rescue animals that have been abandoned, lost, or whose owners are no longer able to care for them. We provide foster care until forever homes are located. Our animals are spay/neutered, receive necessary shots and other veterinary care as needed. Each year, relying only on the generosity of donors and small grants, ARF helps an increasing number of dogs and cats, turning sad stories into happy tails. ARF works to educate our population about the importance of responsible pet ownership, including the need for spay/neuter and heart worm disease prevention.

Volunteers work in the ARF office, assist at clinic & nail events, serve as foster parents to dogs and cats until they can be adopted. If you love to be around people who love animals, ARF just may be the organization for you. For information, email info@idyllwildarf.org or call 951-659-1122.
