Plant of the week: Gooseberry

Look how beautiful these are! Gooseberries! I found them in the burn area down by the creek about 1/2 mile from the Hub (remember that’s the dirt parking area at the very end of Tollgate, past all of Idy Arts where the mountain bikers park). They are a type of currant. Mule deer and bears love them. They have little prickly hairs all over them but I’ve read they have amazing antioxidants and a lot of vitamin C. Zoom in if you can. Since this is the very first plant I’ve ever run across, I think I’ll leave them for the deer! But they are amazing looking. Just wanted to share.

Local Organization of the Month:

In this new section, we will highlight a different 501(c)3 organization each month. We hope to give you ideas on different organizations that you can get involved with both as volunteers & donors. The secret to community is “GETTING INVOLVED” and we want to highlight the different organizations that give to our community and need people like YOU to get involved.
Animal Rescue Friends

If you have a big place in your heart for animals, you might want to give some of your time to ARF. ARF has been serving the community since 1994. A volunteer, grassroots, non-profit organization, ARF’s mission is to rescue animals that have been abandoned, lost, or whose owners are no longer able to care for them. We provide foster care until forever homes are located. Our animals are spay/neutered, receive necessary shots and other veterinary care as needed. Each year, relying only on the generosity of donors and small grants, ARF helps an increasing number of dogs and cats, turning sad stories into happy tails. ARF works to educate our population about the importance of responsible pet ownership, including the need for spay/neuter and heart worm disease prevention.
Volunteers work in the ARF office, assist at clinic & nail events, serve as foster parents to dogs and cats until they can be adopted. If you love to be around people who love animals, ARF just may be the organization for you. For information, email info@idyllwildarf.org or call 951-659-1122.
